An Altar to the Hand
Benin, Nigeria, 18th/19th century
Brass
This cylindrical altar to the hand, or ikegobo, was produced by the Edo people in the kingdom of Benin. After making a small offering, the celebrant would hold their hand over the altar so that it might be strengthened. This example was made for an unknown Iyoba, or mother of the king. She is shown in the centre, with an elaborate headdress, flanked by her attendants.
The Benin people developed a sophisticated culture of bronze and brass sculpture from the 16th century onwards. Following the destruction of Benin City in 1897, religious works such as this were plundered and sold abroad.
