THE AGE OF LEONARDO
Christian Themes in Italian Renaissance Prints
13 January – 24 June
Print Bay, Beige Gallery
Marking the loan of some of the finest Leonardo da Vinci drawings from the Royal Collection to Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery (13 January – 25 March), this special display, drawn from the Barber’s collection, features ten works by some of the greatest 16th-century Italian print-makers.
From Marcantonio Raimondi’s intricate series of the Life of the Virgin to Agostino Carracci’s awe-inspiring Ecce Homo, it explores Renaissance and Mannerist ideals in the depiction of Christian subjects. It also examines some of the printmaking techniques most favoured during this period.
The display will be complemented by a superb chalk copy of Leonardo’s La Belle Ferronnière by the great Neoclassical artist Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres.
