A Brush with the East
Richard McGowan

8 September – 30 October

The Barber’s beautiful and serene Chinese silk drawing, Mountainous Landscape, by Sheng Mou, first came to Birmingham-based artist Richard McGowan’s attention three years ago. Impressed by its haunting grace and sense of space, suggested with the most economical use of brush and ink, he has subsequently aimed to imbue his own work with that oriental lightness of touch and restraint.

Working in acrylic paint on unframed canvases of various sizes, McGowan’s work is characterised by recurring, apparently solid forms that might suggest elements and features of the natural world. These hover on hazy, watery backgrounds, the irregular edges of which sometimes allow the canvas to show through. With repeating, abstract motifs, McGowan creates rhythms in single paintings or groups of works, which simultaneously suggest concepts of time and space.
