BanburyBanbury was principally a market and union town. It was therefore fairly agricultural, and held a weekly market for cattle, sheep and horses. There were also several breweries and agricultural implement works (i.e. farming tools). Banbury also made rope, tents, sacking, bricks and tiles, and even prams and carriages. Corn mills and a tannery also existed, the tannery being in particular for preserving kid (goat skins). However Banbury was most famous at that time, and actually achieved a national reputation, for its superb cakes! These were made in large quantities and distributed all around the country. |
