DowlaisDowlais was chiefly famous for its iron and coal industries during the Industrial Revolution. It was responsible for 75% of coal output in the area, and had a special system of intricate reservoirs and channels called the ‘Dowlais Free Drainage System’ especially to carry water to the iron and coal works. However, by the end of the 19th century these industries had declined because the iron works had been dedicated to making steel, and much cheaper coal could be obtained elsewhere. Iron could be found in purer forms abroad, in countries such as Spain. |
