Dundee

In the 18th Century, Dundee was already famous for textiles, but also made linen, and produced sail cloth for ships. However in the early 18th century, Dundee became known as ‘Juteopolis’, because it had started to produce ‘jute’ which was used instead of linen. The population of the city expanded very quickly as a result of this industry.

It is also thought that marmalade was first invented in Dundee, by a woman called Janet Keillor, who was trying to find a use for Seville oranges. Her son, James, developed the recipe, and opened a factory which became famous around the world for its production of jams and marmalade.

The whaling industry was also important to Dundee at this time, since whale oil was used as part of the process of making jute.
