OxfordIn the 18th century Oxford was still really a market town, and was the home of the famous Oxford University. The population grew slowly. In the late 18th century a market was built for meat, fish, and vegetables. In the late 19th Century Oxford began making marmalade, and there was also an iron foundry. Publishing was another new industry in Oxford at that time. However, Oxford remained a city consisting mainly of craftsmen who supplied the renowned university with what they needed, rather than being a big industrial centre. |
