Dürer to Spencer
Highlights on Paper from
University College London

This selection of some of the finest drawings, watercolours and prints from University College London is the first exhibition in a series celebrating the crucial educational role of university art collections in Great Britain. It is not only the largest display to date of works from UCL’s holdings, but also the first time such a show has been held outside of London. The collection was begun in 1847 but first exhibited to the public in 1930 — two years before the founding of the Barber Institute. Artists featured include: Dürer, Holbein, Rubens, Van Dyck, Rembrandt, Wright of Derby, Turner, Constable, Whistler, Gwen and Augustus John, Wyndham Lewis, Stanley Spencer and other twentieth-century winners of the Slade Prize. A special focus is the work of the renowned British Neoclassical sculptor and draughtsman, John Flaxman (1755-1826), whose work formed the original UCL collection, and who is represented by both sculpture and drawings.

This exhibition is co-curated by Dr Emma Chambers, Curator of UCL Art Collections, and is accompanied by a fully illustrated Introduction and Collections Guide.
