Collected Works

The colourful world of collecting works of art, and the excitement, intrigue and obsession that it can involve, have provided biographers, poets and novelists with a rich source of subject matter. This evening of readings, including fiction, non-fiction and drama by the likes of Robert Browning, Henry James, Michael Frayn and Simon Gray, has been organized in collaboration with the University of Birmingham’s English Department.

The exhibition curators, Paul Spencer-Longhurst, Tessa Sidey and Michael Cullen, are joined by Jonathan Watkins, Director of Birmingham’s IKON Gallery, and Jane Blood, Director and North West Representative of Christie’s, for a lively debate on collecting for private and public collections, chaired by the Barber’s Director, Ann Sumner.

‘Behind Closed Doors:
An Insider’s View of the English Country House’

After 35 years of working for the National Trust and the Historic Houses Association, David Brown reveals all in this amusing insight into life ‘behind the baize door’ of some of his favourite country houses in and around the West Midlands. The lecture will be preceded at 6.30pm by a buffet and private view of the exhibition.
