Art in Bronte Country

Friends trip led by Professor Ann Sumner, Director of the Barber Institute.

14 – 18 September 2010
(open to Non-Friends)

Following the very successful Art in the Lake District tour last September, the Director has agreed to join us this year as we explore the delightful art collections of West Yorkshire. The trip will include a visit to the Bronte Museum at Howarth, home to the talented authors and a chance to see amateur art works by Charlotte Bronte (including her sketch of St Martins’ Parsonage in Birmingham.

East Riddleston Hall (National Trust) recently used as a backdrop for a TV adaptation of Wuthering Heights and today famous for the needlework collections and cherry gardens. The trip will include a visit to the superb collections at Cartwright Hall (Vasari, Reynolds, Gainsborough, Rossetti, Clawsen and Edwin Hay); the National Museum of Film and Photography; the David Hockney Gallery at Saltaire; Bolton Abbey; the Yorkshire Sculpture Park; Nostell Priory as well as a short walk in Ilkley Moor to view the White Well.

Trip Itinerary

We will be staying at the Craiglands Hotel in Ilkley, the former spa town, which is situated in the heart of the Yorkshire Dales. The river Wharfe runs through the town and our hotel is close to the famous Ilkley Moor. The town boasts a Toy Museum, Manor House Museum, Betty’s Tea Shop, nice shops and the famous Box Tree Restaurant.

Day 1 – 14 September 2010

Leave the Barber Institute, drive to Yorkshire, stopping for lunch and a visit to
Nostell Priory and Parkland, an 18th Century manor house (National Trust) near Wakefield, which has been the home of the Winn family for 350 years. Arrive Ilkley in time for supper in hotel.

Day 2 – 15 September 2010

Depart 9.30am for visit to Bronte Parsonage. 10am arrival followed by a visit to the church in Howarth at 11.30am. In the afternoon we continue to beautiful Bolton Abbey, which has inspired so many of England’s greatest artists, especially Turner. Chance to visit Ilkley’s many restaurants in the evening, including the famous Michelin starred Box Tree!

Day 3- 16 September 2010

Depart 10am, arrive 10.30am at Cartwright Hall Art Gallery, Bradford (works by Clausen, Rossetti Maddox-Brown). 1pm lunch at the National Museum of Film and Photography – visit the Kodak Gallery showing the History of Popular Photography. Supper in the hotel.

Day 4 – 17 September 2010

Depart 9.30am for Saltaire, the world renowned nineteenth-century model industrial development designed by Sir Titus Salt – a world heritage site, including Saltaire Mill – David Hockney Gallery, and the 1989 Tennis faxed work, a display of Burmantofts Pottery and nearby the famous Congregational Church, built in 1858, and lunch (10am – 12.30pm).

2pm free time in Ilkley, the Manor House, Toy Museum, Betty’s Tea Shop – optional walk on Ilkley Moor from the Cow and Calf Rock to White Wells. Supper in the hotel.

Day 5 – 18 September 2010

9am depart for Howarth to catch the steam train on the Keighley and Worth Valley Railway to Keighley. Visit to East Riddleston Hall (superb 17th century needlework collection); used for TV adaptation of Wuthering Heights, coffee. Depart for Birmingham via Yorkshire Sculpture Park and late lunch. Late afternoon/early evening return to The Barber Institute.
