Ruth Claxton

A selection of well-known images from the Barber’s permanent collection appear here as never seen before. Using postcards of portraits and figurative paintings, Ruth Claxton explores the nature of ‘the Gaze’—the real and implied visual relationships between figures within the picture and between subject and viewer. By manipulating the top layer of the cards, she raises questions concerning surface and substance, structure—both material and virtual—the nature of representation, and our own relationship with the object. This display complements a major exhibition of Claxton’s work at Ikon Gallery, Birmingham, which runs from 2 April to 18 May.
