Jangzadeh (‘Victim of War’)
Contemporary Works
by Mohsen Keiany

Harrowing personal experiences of war, torture and death illuminate the powerful art of Mohsen Keiany. Having grown up in a culture of conflict — Mohsen fought against Saddam Hussein’s troops in the Iran/Iraq war at the age of just 14, and saw friends tortured and killed — he sought to recover from a breakdown through his painting. Arriving in Birmingham in 2000, he became involved with a refugee programme at the Barber Institute and developed a fascination for the work of the German Expressionists, feeling an empathy with Carl Wilhelm Kolbe, Käthe Kollwitz and Max Beckmann. Mohsen’s new mixed-media works in this exhibition are inspired by these prints from the Barber collection and reflect his own traumatic past.
