Turner, Printmaking and the Liber Studiorum
Designed to complement the exhibition in the Main Galleries, this small show of prints from the permanent collection comprises a selection of plates from Turner's didactic publication, the Liber Studiorum (Book of Studies). The young artist began to publish this in parts from 1807, with the intention not only of advertising his own work, but also of establishing the pre-eminence of landscape as a genre. The exhibition also includes David Lucas's highly-charged mezzotint, The Lock, engraved in 1834 for English Landscape, a series of landscape studies by Constable which were inspired by Turner's example.
