John Murphy:
And Things throw Light on Things...
The visual arts, theatre, literature and classical music have always had strong links and associations for the artist John Murphy, here returning for his second collaboration with the Barber Institute in a split-site exhibition with Birmingham contemporary art gallery, Ikon.
Murphy
once said: “The role of the artist is as much to ‘find’ as it is to make
art”, often placing his own paintings and photography alongside Old Masters
and ‘found’ objects. This exhibition follows that philosophy, with the
artist using as his starting point gallery favourites Still
Life with Musical Instruments by Evaristo Baschenis (shown right)
and The
Attributes of Painting by François Bonvin. And at Ikon, Murphy is
inspired by works lent by the Barber, including Gainsborough’s portrait
of the singer and composer Giusto Ferdinando Tenducci and Manet’s print
of Baudelaire. The exhibitions are accompanied by two linked events in
the Barber Concert Hall.
