The Concert Hall
The Barber Concert Hall hosts the Barber’s popular Lunchtime and Evening chamber music series, as well as a number of concerts given by the University of Birmingham’s Department of Music and the Birmingham Early Music Festival.
Performances include the students’ annual Summer Festival of Music (an opera production and a series of concerts), professional opera, and recitals by many of the UK’s rising stars in the field of classical chamber music. The highly regarded Evening Concert series comprises seven performances a year by some of the world’s leading chamber music ensembles and soloists, including singers. Recent performers include Richard Goode, Academy of Ancient Music, Håkan Hardenberger and The Royal String Quartet.
Designed by Robert Atkinson (1883-1952), one of Britain's foremost architects of the 1920s and ’30s, the Grade II listed concert hall saw Phase 1 of its refurbishment completed in October 2008, with generous support from the Henry Barber Trust, the Friends of the Barber Institute of Fine Arts, alumni of the University and other private donors.
