PRESS RELEASE
Catch art shows while you can with Art Bus!
Catching some of Birmingham’s most exciting winter exhibitions before they close will be made easier next weekend when the free Art Bus service returns to link The Barber Institute of Fine Arts at the University of Birmingham, Ikon Gallery at Brindleyplace, and the RBSA Gallery in the Jewellery Quarter.
At the Barber, The Good Britain Guide 2004’s Art Gallery of the Year, there’s a last chance to enjoy the current major loan exhibition of wonderful landscape drawings and epic history paintings in Bartholomeus Breenbergh: ‘Joseph distributing corn in Egypt’, featuring the work of the under-appreciated 17th-century Dutch artist, together with the accompanying exhibition Crossing Genres: Dutch Landscape and History Prints of the 17th Century. Both exhibitions close on Sunday 23 January.
The Barber is also one of the venues for the collaborative, split-site exhibition John Murphy: And things reflect other Things, most of which is also on display at the Ikon Gallery in Oozells Square. Murphy has used Old Masters and modern works from the Barber’s collection, including works by Gainsborough, Guardi, Picasso and Dix as the starting point for his own paintings, ‘ready-mades’ and arrangements.
Ikon is also currently hosting the found-object installation of Benin artist Georges Adéagbo, Brian Duffy’s sound installation Optophonic Lunaphone, and June Bum Park’s witty video Parking. Again, all exhibitions run until Sunday 23 January.
Meanwhile, the RBSA is exhibiting stART which offers affordable pieces of art and a chance to start your own art collection, Freeze, a wintry selection of studio ceramics and glass, plus designer-made jewellery made of ice topaz, resin and other materials, while Artist’s Showcase features ceramic wall pieces by Paul Williamson. There’s also a chance to see artists in action with demonstrations of etching (11am-1pm) and painting ceramics (2-4pm)
Art Bus starts from the Barber Institute at the University of Birmingham at 11.00am, calling at Broad Street/Oozells Square for Ikon, then Broad Street for the RBSA, before returning to the Barber and commencing a further circuit. There is ample free weekend parking around the Barber and in the University’s South Car Park.
Art Bus co-organiser Andrew Davies said: “With some very varied and exciting exhibitions, including the Ikon-Barber collaboration, finishing next Sunday, Art Bus provides an ideal, enjoyable and easy way to catch them before they close.”
Art Bus is free. Timetables for the service can be found here on the Barber Institute website, or on fliers at the three galleries, mac and local tourist information centres.
