Posy Simmonds, the author and illustrator best known perhaps for her many cartoon series for the Guardian newspaper, visits the Barber’s Print Study Room. Here she is seen enjoying a coloured etching by John Leech, entitled Mr Briggs Contemplates a Day’s Fishing, of 1865. |

The Prints and Drawings Study Room
The Barber recently opened a well appointed Study Room to house its fine collection of prints and drawings. These number over a thousand works, covering six centuries of the draughtsman’s and printmaker’s art. There are outstanding drawings by Dürer, Ingres, Rembrandt, Pietro da Cortona and Turner, along with more recent works by Degas and a wonderful group by the German Expressionists. The print collection includes fine groups by Dürer, Goya, Italian and Flemish Renaissance masters, 19th-century French artists, as well as 20th-century works, again including many German examples.
We show a rotating selection of works on paper in our two dedicated exhibition spaces, but there is so much more to see. All of our works on paper are now listed online, many with photographs, and so if there is something which is not on display do make an appointment to visit the Study Room to see it there. The room is open between 10am and 1pm and from 2pm to 4-30pm — strictly by appointment. We also welcome small groups, especially students, who might be interested in seeing a selection of works. Numbers are limited to twelve people. You can contact us to make an appointment at collections@barber.org.uk or +44 (0) 121 414 7333.
A Welcome to the Prints and Drawings Study Room Mondays 7 December 2009; 11 January 2010; 8 February 2010 A 45-minute introduction to the varied riches of the Barber’s collection of works of art on paper.
