Research at the Barber
The Barber Institute of Fine Arts provides a wealth of research resources which are open by appointment to students, scholars, as well as members of the public. They include the Barber Fine Art Library, the Barber Music Library and the Coin Study Room, and we have recently opened a study room for Prints and Drawings. The Prints and Drawings Study Room is where you can see works of art on paper which are not currently on display. The Coin Study Room houses the extensive collection of coins and seals, together with a specialised library.
The Institute is currently engaged in a series of research projects which will culminate in an exciting programme of future exhibitions, displays and educational events, as well as a range of new publications. The partnerships we have forged with departments within the University of Birmingham and scholars from across the academic and museum world in previous projects have informed our distinctive and carefully researched exhibitions. Previous projects such as Encounters (2007-2008), Gwen John (2008), Matthew Boulton and the Art of Making Money (2009-2010) and Northern Lights: Swedish Landscapes from the Nationalmuseum, Stockholm (2009) have resulted in distinctive and carefully researched exhibitions and accompanying publications. We are also energetically engaged in researching our own collections, often with the support of our colleagues in the university and from further afield.
