Romantic Landscapes on Paper:
Britain and Beyond
To complement Moonrise over Europe, this selection of drawings, watercolours and prints explores many facets of Romantic landscape. Focused on British works, including the rarely exhibited watercolour of Ludlow Castle by Turner, an arresting Constable mezzotint and a highly atmospheric chalk drawing by Gainsborough, it also forges links with continental Romanticism, featuring prints by Théodore Rousseau and the German artist Ludwig Richter. The display traces the ways in which artists of the Romantic period responded to nature and the landscape around them. Drawing parallels with the literature of the day, it charts the gradual shift of emphasis from idealised to intensely personal landscape.
